Excerpts from the Cosmo Bride Indonesia, who asked for our quotes to go with the photos. I am grateful that once I took the time to write these intimate stories for the wider world, because now, after the frenzy has subsided, I still have the memories...
What was your wedding theme?
We didn't have a specific theme in mind, but we did have an idea of a feeling (atmosphere) that we wanted to have - sophisticated and understated, yet light, breezy, uninhibited and fun! We started expressing this idea to our guests starting with the invitations. In addition to a simple card that invited people to join us in "Joyful feasting and dancing in the sand" (from www.weddingpapperdivas.com), we included a "hand-made" insert, advising guest to wear something white and beach friendly, leaving jackets and high heels at home.
We followed through with the setting, decorations & party favors. Instead of more formal rows of chairs during the ceremony, we had our guests "lounge" on white ottomans arranged in a semi-circle. The venue was decorated with simple yet elegant arrangements of white flowers.
Upon arrival in Bali, guests received cute little organic cotton tote bags designed by us, which proclaimed the effects of the imaginary drug "Balium" that they were now under.
And at the ceremony everyone got a pair of white wayfarer sunglasses (like the ones on the What Do I Wear? card) decorated by the bride & groom.
And finally, for the “night cap”, everyone recieved a little “take out” box of gourmet marshmallows with graham crackers. The custom-maid ribbon on the bag of sweets naughtily proclaimed “Sweet Dreams. Lick Me, Taste Me, Bite Me”.
We are strong believers in “when in Bali, do as Balinese”. There was never a question in our mind that we would have Balinese/Indonesian food at the wedding! During the cocktail hour guests nibbled on exquisitely presented Sate Lilit with Peanut Sauce & impeccable Pepes Jamur Rolls.
For the first course guests were served beautiful silky Chilled Zucchini Broth with Passion Fruit Sorbet & Jicama Slaw. This was followed by a family-style serving of Ayam Sambal Matah (shredded roasted chicken) with Emping Crackers, because sharing is caring and we liked the idea of encouraging table interaction through food sharing.
The main course was served buffet style and included Beef Rendang (slowly cooked in coconut milk & spices), Hasil Laut (seafood in curry broth), Plecing Kangkung (stirfried morning glory) & Urab Jamun (mixed vegetables with toasted grated coconut).
In keeping with the understated intimate atmosphere of the day, we chose to have a personalized desserts instead of a cake. With the dedicated help of Ashton, Alila’s executive chef, we created a dessert that was a “marriage of our mom’s best desserts". The resulting Hazelnut Mouse with Lemon Core on a meringue shell was very tasty and very special!
The bridal & brides made bouquets were made with white tuberose, white roses, orchid, casablanca lily and geraniums.
Christos Chiffon Strapless Gown.
Alek, wanted to be involved in the process, and I generally value his opinions on the matters of style and fashion, but I didn't want him shopping for a gown with me. So, we browsed through literally a thousand images online, looking for a beach-friendly flowing dress, until we came upon this flowing gown by Christos. It was the lightest softest dress I had ever held. I absolutely loved it!
There are so many wonderful memories from that day, from the very emotional and personal ceremony led by our friend Konstantin to the stunning sunset photo shoot on the cliff above the Bali Sea and the heartfelt toasts from our friends and family. But perhaps our favorite moment of all was, when after some very competitive folk dancing, the groomsmen, very politely and ceremoniously, approached all the women at the party, including the bride, effortlessly lifting them up and carrying them over to the pool, where they were released, not so ceremoniously, into the refreshing water below (I had by then changed out of the wedding gown, so the precious Christos did not sustain any damage). In no time, everyone was in the pool in one carefree raucous bundle.
That was OUR DAY OUR WAY! :)
