Xigaze is home to the second largest monastery in Tibet, the Tashilhunpo (Tashi) Monastery and the seat of the second holiest man, the Panchen Lama. It was founded in 1447 by the first Dalai Lama, Gendun Drupa.

We spent the rest of the day waiting for mystical permits that would allow us to continue. There was a lot of shopping to be done in this town. Most "Tibetan" things, like clothes and craft were actually made in Nepal or India. Here, like in the rest of China, everything is sold with at least a 500% premium and it's our job to get as close to the 100% of the price as possible.
